Postdoctoral Position:
Post-doctoral positions are available to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of protein kinases using computational and experimental techniques. Research experience in molecular biology, molecular evolution, genomics, structural biology or bioinformatics is required. Experience in applying sequence analysis and standard computational tools in a Linux/Unix environment is desirable, but not required. We are an inter-disciplinary research group interested in using the evolutionary information embedded in genomic sequences to understand how signaling proteins, such as protein kinases, work. For more information on what we do, visit our homepage.
Undergraduate Positions:
Interested in research training in the areas of cancer biology, cell signalling, biochemistry and molecular biology? The Evolutionary Systems Biology Group is seeking enthusiastic undergraduates to work in our laboratory. We are interested in students who can spend at least 5-6 semesters in the lab.
Please submit your CV to Dr. Kannan (nkannan-at-uga.edu) for further consideration.

AI/ML protein research scientist
As part of the NSF-funded BioFoundry grant, the Kannan Lab is seeking a Research Scientist to develop machine learning algorithms and software tools to model protein sequences and 3D structures. The ideal candidate should be familiar with state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, including, for example, protein language models, representation learning, diffusion models, and self-supervised learning techniques. The candidate will work with a team of world-class scientists to develop and fine-tune protein language models for glycoenzyme evolution and design.
Position Requirements
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related technical field, OR M.S. in Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related technical field, plus 2+ years of industry or research experience.
- Experience in applying deep learning models for biological sequence and structure analysis.
- Strong software engineering skills and demonstrated experience in TensorFlow and PyTorch.
- Strong communication skills.
Additional Requirements
- Domain expertise in glycobiology, biochemistry, or structural biology is a plus, but not required.
